Beavers weren’t the only animals that had giant versions of present day critters. The giant-short faced bear was definitely one of the apex predators of the Pleistocene. Growing larger than a polar bear at 15 ft long and 6ft at the shoulder, this bear was indisputably a king among mega-fauna. Weighing at over 2,200 lb, this beast ate bison, muskoxen, deer, caribou, horses, and even ground sloths. They lived in the grasslands and woodlands and were solitary animals. Their extinction also continues to be studied, but competition for a shrinking supply of food is one possibility.
