Squirrels aren’t the only plentiful mammal you might see at Mastodon State Historic Site. White tailed deer also have an abundant population. Their diet includes leaves, fruits, grass, alfalfa, lichens, and fungi because they are herbivores. They are well known for their white tails that point up when alarmed. Only the males have antlers like other deer. They also have a small amount of velvet that covers them that helps the antlers grow. They shed their antlers in January and February and sometimes migrate south for the winter depending on the severity of the winter.
