Despite outnumbering his enemy, Braddock tried in vain to overcome the environemental and tactical advanatages the French and Indians used. The General was shot just as he issue the order to retreat. George Washington stepped in to help get Braddock to safety and lead some semblence of an organized withdrawal. The remnants of Braddock's Army returned south to meet Dunbar's reserve whom they had separated from a week earlier.
