Braddock assembled his forces at Fort Cumberland, on the western edge of the Virginia colony. It was here that Braddock met young George Washington, who was somehat responsible for putting Braddock in this situation. Although the total army was impressive in it's size, it lack one very critical element: Native American support. Insian guides were essential to survival on the American frontier. But Braddock had alientated also possible alliances during his short time in-country. He left Fort Cumberland in the summer of 1755 expecting victory - expecting to conquer Fort Duquesne and move on defeat the French across the colonial frontier. But, he and his army were unaware of the challenges that awaited them in the Pennsylvania woods.
