For thousands of years, the First Peoples of the Americas inhabited the watery confluence later known as the Forks of the Ohio - where the Allegheny and the Monongahela rivers meet to form the Ohio River - at present-day Pittsburgh. As more French and English colonists arrived in the eastern seaboard in the 18th Century, Native Americans were displaced further west. The Allegheny Mountains were critical to the expansion efforts of both the French and British empires efforts for over a hundred years - leading to great conflict.
