The Liberal Arts Philosophy: Sturm Hall & the Burwell Center for Career Achievement - Serena

My name is Serena Graham, and I am going to be your tour guide for our next couple stops! I am from Erie, Colorado about 45 minutes North of here and am majoring in International Studies and minoring in Sociolegal Studies. I am also on the Women’s Club Volleyball team and help referee intramural sports.

We are now outside Sturm Hall on the west side of Driscoll Green.

Sturm Hall is home to the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, the largest and most diverse academic unit at DU. Even though we’re a major research university, we have a liberal arts philosophy at our core, and work to ensure that all graduates are exceptional writers, have strong critical thinking skills, and are able to excel in a number of fields. Part of your class schedule is made up of classes that fall under our Common Curriculum, allowing you to take classes in various disciplines and explore your interests further.

On the east side of Driscoll Green across from Sturm is the Burwell Center for Career Achievement, which was completed in the fall of 2020. This space embraces something I love about DU: our desire to succeed during and after our four years here. Through Burwell, students have access to our Career and Professional Development services, where they can ask for help with their resume and cover letters, attend career fairs, practice interview questions, work with peer advisors, and even take professional headshots with our new Headshot Booth!

On top of being a DU student, I also work for the Denver Broncos on their Marketing and Promotions team. I like to tell people that my position is anything and everything they ask me to do, but really, I focus on game day entertainment. I am at every Broncos home game, which can definitely be some long days, but I love getting to meet and interact with fans and see the behind-the-scenes of NFL game day. I was able to get connected to this job through my friend Josie, a fellow tour guide, but Burwell helped with crafting my resume.

94% of our students utilized DU career services last year, exploring professional experiences during college or guaranteeing their continued success after graduation.
