Global Perspectives: SIE Complex, Cherrington Global Scholars, & Study Abroad - Micah

Hi! My name is Micah Masten, and I am going to be your tour guide for our last stops! I am from Northern California, and now I am a permanent Colorado resident and am majoring in Physiology and Health and Disease and minoring in Chemistry, Medical Physics, Business Administration, I am also involved in Club Rugby and multiple nonprofits around the Denver area.

We are now just south of the Evans Chapel, near the unmistakable blue tower of the SIE Complex, home to our Josef Korbel School of International Studies. Korbel is a globally-ranked school for international affairs and public policy and actually requires its majors to study abroad.

This brings me to another reason why I chose DU. Over 70% of our undergraduate students study abroad, and they can choose from 100+ program sites in 40+ countries on every continent besides Antarctica. No matter what you choose to study, we value a global perspective in the classroom, and our study abroad program allows you to make the world your classroom. With the Cherrington Global Scholars program, which is exclusive to DU, many of the additional costs associated with studying abroad - including airfare to and from your site - are covered. To qualify for the Cherrington Global Scholars initiative, students must be a Junior or Senior in good standing and have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Students pay the same cost for the term they go abroad as they would for any other quarter at DU, eliminating financial barriers that students might face.

I had the chance to study abroad in Dunedin, New Zealand. Not only did I get to learn through school, but also immersing myself in the culture. The most memorable part of my experience was getting to see all of the National Parks on the South Island.  I also had the chance to live an international community where I was surrounded by new friends from both New Zealand and all over the world. Plus, a little perk is that I have the opportunity to graduate early, by bringing back a credit and half for every credit I earned while there.

With such a wide variety of programs for students to choose from, you can find one that can fulfill exactly what you are looking for in a study abroad experience. Whether you take classes for your major, minor, or you use the time to delve into a new culture, the University of Denver will help you find a program that fits your needs.
