Foursquare Garden

The Wentz Garden is modeled after a Pennsylvania German, "foursquare" garden, with four raised beds in the center, and a bed along the wood fence.  Colonial German families grew vegetables like beans, cabbage, onion, parsnips, and pumpkins in the center beds, and herbs for seasoning, and ornamental and medicinal flowers in the outer beds.  The garden was located in a sunny spot, close to the house, and women in the family were responsible for tending.  The Farmstead thanks the Wentz Weeder volunteers, who plant and care for the garden throughout the year.  Feel free to enter the garden and take a walk around.

The next stop is just to the right of the garden.
