Quechuan Wool Hat (Chullo)

Peru

Late 20th century

Wool, beads

The woolen Chullo is a man’s hat of choice in the Andes region, where winters in the mountains are cold and windy. While weaving is traditionally women’s work, it is the men who knit the Chullos for themselves. The designs vary depending on region, community, and one’s personal taste. Though the primary purpose of this hat is to keep the head warm, a fancy, beaded Chullo would likely be reserved for special occasions, such as festivals and weddings.
