Igbo Gourd Helmet

Nigeria

Mid-20th century

Gourd, wood, leather, amulets, metal, beads, shells

Traditionally, in many parts of Africa, helmets not only offered protection but also identified a man’s rank and status. The carved face on the helmet’s crown is typically Igbo, elongated and painted white. Probably worn by a hunter, the helmet bears leather talismans that augur good fortune as well as protection from evil and harm.
