Rabari Head Ring (Indhoni)

India

Mid-20th century

Cotton, silk floss, beads, braided trim, mirrors

In many parts of the world, it is a custom to carry large or heavy loads on one’s head, which leaves the hands free for other tasks. In the arid regions of western India, nomadic Rabari women wear decorative head cushions to protect their heads and to help balance jugs of water. Rabari embroidery is characterized by its bright colors, delicate stitches, and use of mirrors (shisha) that are believed to trap the evil eye.
