Stop 2: Demi-Lune and Outer Defenses

The coverface served as an initial line of defense and shielded the granite walls of Fort Warren from direct fire by enemy cannon from either a broad sided ship or an invaded nearby island. The crescent-shaped stone structure within it is known as the Demi-Lune. The Demil-Lune offered defending soldiers a covered position to fire at attacking enemy foot soldiers approaching from the beach. The road to the left was constructed later.
