Founded on this site in 1866-67 by James Neilson and Son, reed makers, this factory was built to make reeds and heddles, essential components of the many power-looms in the city and surrounding areas at the time. The factory had a stone face to John Street, but the faces to Love Loan and Margaret Street, seen here were fine examples of the use of red and white brick, fashionable for industrial buildings at the time. The lotus chimney was unique in Glasgow, if not in Scotland. Regular 35mm camera, digital print © HES
