This was the centrepiece of the frontage of the Saracen Foundry in Hawthorn Street, which was moved here in 1869 by the firm of Walter Macfarlane & Co, which was already established as a major maker of ornamental and architectural cast iron products. From this Possilpark foundry the firm became the world’s leading producer of such goods. The building in this view, decorated with some of the company’s products, was designed by James Boucher, a Glasgow architect with a close association with the firm.
