West Transept

As you look into the west transept, look up and you should take note of the beautiful stained glass. Most of the stained glass in the cathedral depicts the life of Saint Augustine. Be sure to look at all the stained-glass windows. They were created by Mayer and company, from Munich Germany, and were installed in 1909.

Also, in the West transept you can see a beautiful side chapel. This chapel is where we as Catholics, reserve the sacred Eucharist, reserved hosts are kept safely in a Tabernacle. This is for prayers of adoration of Christ, and, to distribute to our parishioners who are sick or homebound. A beautiful mosaic last supper is depicted over this altar.

This chapel is closed for visitors when prayer services are taking place. If the curtain is closed no access permitted during these times.  When open be sure to take a look at the Last Supper mosaic over the chapel altar.

At the entrance to this chapel you will see a Silver Lamp hanging above the door.

This sanctuary lamp is said to have been a gift to the parish from a Spanish sea captain caught in a storm, who pledged a gift to the church in whatever port he found safety.  It is one of the few artifacts to survive the 1887 fire.  Made from Mexican silver in the 17th century the lamp predated the building and was crafted by local silversmiths. 

For the next stop, please walk over towards the Blessed Sacrament chapel, to your right. If the gold curtain is closed, you may not enter at this time. You may skip to the next stop and return later, after 12 noon for a visit to this chapel.
