Chestnut, Hybrid

*Specimen Tree Temporarily Unavailable*

Standing here is a chestnut tree that is a hybrid between the American and Chinese chestnut, or Castanea denata and mollissima. It is bred specifically for its strong resistance to Chestnut Blight. While genetically mixed, it tends to display more traits of the Chinese Chestnut, including its growth form and durability. Reaching 40 to 60 feet in both height and width, it grows at a moderate rate and is recommended over wild-type American Chestnuts for long-term success in forest restoration and planting. In addition to its resilience, this hybrid produces edible nuts with high wildlife value, making it both an ecological and practical asset in woodland environments. Visit the Hayes Arboretum Nature Center to see the building's original wooden American Chestnut beams.
