Winterberry (Male)

As we explore further, you'll notice a fascinating shrub known as the Male Winterberry, scientifically named Ilex verticillata 'Southern Gentleman'. Despite its name, these winterberries don't resemble trees but rather compact bushes. What sets them apart are their striking reddish-orange berries, which persist through the winter months, providing a pop of color against the snow. In summer, its dark green glossy leaves offer a lush backdrop, transitioning to vibrant yellow hues in the fall. The leaves are ovate with toothed edges, contributing to the plant's distinctive appearance. Clusters of small flowers adorn the winterberry, often no larger than the berries themselves. These delicate blooms feature 4 to 8 white petals surrounding a yellowish-green center.
