Magnolia, Cucumber

This tree is the Cucumber Magnolia, or the Magnolia acuminata. Pioneers once used its fruit in herbal remedies, adding it to whiskey to treat various ailments. Notice its large, pyramidal crown and low, sweeping branches. This tree is rare in the Midwest, therefore, the Cucumber Magnolia does not play a major role in local wildlife. The leaves of this tree can reach up to 10 inches in length with a wide, ovular shape and a pointed tip. The fruit consists of pink seed clusters and the mature bark possesses narrow ridges and long fissures.
