Just across the street is Carnegie Public Library, built in 1904. There has been virtually no change on the exterior of the building, except for the installation of a less drafty front door. So, the classic façade remains pristine despite a discreetly designed addition on the north side. Inside, the original paneling and many of the first bookshelves are still intact. The library itself, however, is not fustian. It has a surprisingly up-to-date and varied collection of over 20,000 volumes, computerized book search equipment and Internet-connected computers available. Downstairs is a heavily used, well-designed children’s section. In a special room, the library maintains the records of the Trinidad Historical Society, the Hispanic Genealogical Society, films of Trinidad newspapers back to the 1880s as well as City Directories from the 1890s, and a vast collection of local and regional history books.
A walk of a block or two east on Church Street (beside the library) takes you back to the city parking lot. If you did not interrupt your walk to visit The AR Mitchell Museum on East Main, please do so now. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to see one of the region’s top western art museums!
