Next is City Hall, finally constructed in 1909, after years of argument over the location, although the foundation was already constructed and serving meanwhile as a great playground for boys pretending it was a fort or the Roman Colosseum. Not counting the foundation, it cost about $12,800, but that bought a lot in those days.
With a flourish of Victorian eclecticism, the architect designed front corner towers of late Italian Renaissance design, placed a French Renaissance balustrade atop the building and fronted the edifice with Greek Ionic capitals above polished black granite columns that stand on Italian Renaissance bases. Somehow, the design holds together.
