Jane Addams Hull House Museum

(NOTE: the following text is from UIC Self Guided Tour)

The Jane Addams Hull House is a foundation of social reform in the United States, founded in 1889 by Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr. Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr were pioneers for women’s, children’s, workers’ and immigrant rights. The Hull House was the site where they would discuss reforms and strikes such as the striking garment workers in 1896, 1910 and 1915.

Hull House was once a complex of 13 buildings, including a theater, art gallery, clubs, dining hall, nursery school, residence for working women, the only library in the neighborhood, as well as one of the first free gyms in the country. The Museum today comprises 2 of the settlement complex's original 13 buildings. These spaces were used variously over the years, including as a nursery school, a library, and a salon for social and political dialogue. Currently, the Hull House serves as a museum and national landmark available for touring. The Hull House is adjacent to UIC's Student Center East and across the street from the Student Recreation Facility. Make sure to take some time to visit before you leave campus!

Admission to the museum on campus is free for UIC students. The hours are Tuesday to Friday & Sunday 9:00am - 5:00pm.
