One afternoon, nourish.NJ received a call from a manager of a nearby grocery store. He explained that due to Covid-related capacity limits at the store, many of his staff lost the overtime hours they relied on to make ends meet. The manager explained he has four staff members (three of whom have children) who were having trouble affording food. He was so clearly upset at the thought of any of his staff--now considered essential workers during the pandemic--having to leave for the day and go home hungry. Even though it was after hours, the Outreach staff hopped in the car and drove to nourish.NJ where they picked up more than 15 bags filled with food, frozen meals, fruit and supplies. They met the grocery store workers in the store parking lot, so they could put the food right into their cars to bring home to their family. The manager thanked nourish.NJ for providing for his staff, so they could continue providing for the community. A year and a half into the COVID-19 pandemic, our community is still struggling to keep food on their table, a roof over their heads, and consistent paychecks. While the world is slowly recovering, our guests continue to need us more than ever before. Hunger Walk gives Nourish.NJ the ability to serve this influx of individuals in need.
