Guest Story 1: Edith & Herb

Our Outreach team received word of an elderly couple, both dealing with several health issues which hindered their everyday lives. Edith and Herb were getting by, but they were unable to leave their home. Through talking with them, the outreach team learned that Herb was very ill and Edith could not stand at the stove long enough to cook, or even boil a kettle of water for her tea. nourish.NJ staff set up a contactless delivery system, making sure to coordinate drop offs with neighbors, so that Edith and Herb had help bringing groceries inside and putting them away. We brought plenty of frozen meals, healthy snacks, and of course plenty of boxes of tea, and even fresh flowers! Edith calls the Outreach team often just to chat, and recently said, “if I could, I would give you a hug, and when I can, I will!” She says she looks forward to their phone chats just as much as the food deliveries. Edith recently shared with us the sad news that Herb had been put in hospice, and thanked us for the food deliveries and company that brighten her days! Nearly 30% of nourish.NJ’s guests are seniors. Stories like Edith & Herb’s are not uncommon, and many elderly individuals have been more isolated than ever during the pandemic. We ensure that our community’s seniors have the help they need, and your support helps us do that!
