In 1948, Manley and Virginia “Ginny” Harris bought a Texaco gas station and dry goods store from Bert Roberts. By October 1949, they were open for business. As a supplement to the gas business, they sold grocery items from a household refrigerator. The grocery business soon outgrew the refrigerator, so in 1950 Manley expanded to the building next door. Throughout the years, many Angelicans have been employed there at one time or another. What started as a true “mom and pop” operation could employ 16 people year-round. The store was expanded five times, growing from 600 square feet in 1950 to over 7,000 square feet which included a walk-in cooler, upright freezers, a bottle return room, a full-service deli, and a return to the old days with gas pumps. In 1987, after 39 years of serving the public, Manley and Ginny sold the then named Harris Shursave to Gary Tyler, who continued the tradition of service and quality of business first established by the Harrises. Gary added booth seating, Quick Draw Lottery, and state-of-the-art scanning registers for faster service and greater accuracy. At a time when most businesses failed during the first five years, “Harris's” as locals still called it, celebrated its fifty-fifth anniversary in 2003. In 2009, the Southern Tier Group, Inc, a group comprised of Angelicans, bought the store to keep a grocery store and gas station in Angelica. Though the store was renamed East End Market, many locals still used its old moniker. After a couple of management and ownership arrangements, the business was ultimately sold to out-of-towners calling themselves AMS Energy Properties Angelica, LLC. The new comers tore down the original building and removed the below ground gas pumps to install an all-in-one metal structure with above ground gas pumps at each corner and a grab and go convenience store in the center. A few days (and gallons of gas!) after the grand opening in 2022, the store closed with no mention of why. The building currently stands empty leaving Angelica with no gas station!
