Wire Hat

Sumbawa, Indonesia

Late 20th century

Copper wire

This type of hat, made from hand-woven copper, is found only on the island of Sumbawa and adjacent islands. Although information about it is scarce, it is believed to be worn by musicians on ritual occasions and funeral ceremonies, or by young men in mourning. The significance of the flower bud seems to be unknown.
