Yao Butterfly Headdress

China

Mid-20th century

Wicker frame, lacquered cotton, beads, silk tassels

The different branches of Yao people wear an extraordinary variety of headwear for both ceremonial and everyday purposes. While it may be worn for other celebrations and festivals, at a wedding this headdress serves as a platform for layers of textiles that traditionally obscure the hat itself, cover the bride’s hair, and veil her face. The embroidered cloths are handed down from mothers to daughters.
