The Miao people are one of many ethnic/minority groups in China who use clothing and accessories to express their unique identity. The Miao have a particular fondness for silver as an emblem of wealth and beauty, as well as for its protective and curative powers. Worn with an elaborate costume and other adornments, this silver headdress is donned by girls and young women for special occasions such as festivals, holidays, and other celebrations. Birds and butterflies, which decorate the headdress, are considered auspicious symbols.
