Yao Headdress

China

Mid-20th century

Cotton, beads, bone, silk

Today, women from the different Yao subgroups typically cover their heads with turban-like wraps or drape them with embroidered kerchiefs. In a past era, a woman likely would have worn this headdress for festivals and ritual ceremonies. The pompoms, which are prominent features on children’s hats, suggest the hat was worn for a special occasion. The red color of the pompom symbolizes happiness and good fortune.
