15 - Santa Barbara Sedge

This is a healthy stand of native Santa Barbara sedge, with bunches of long, flat, dark-green blades. Often called white root, the plant’s strong roots are used by the Miwok people as sewing strands in their intricately coiled baskets. This sedge continues to play an important role in both the local ecosystem and cultural heritage.
