8 - Middle Slough

This stop offers a clear view of Middle Slough, a slow-moving waterway shaped by the tides. Lining the banks are native wetland plants such as tules, buttonbush, and sandbar willow, all of which provide important habitat for birds, amphibians, and other wildlife. Tidal sloughs like this were once a common feature across the Sacramento –San Joaquin Delta 150 years ago, before widespread development and agricultural conversion altered the landscape. This stretch of slough offers a glimpse into the Delta’s natural past—when seasonal flooding, native vegetation, and tidal flows supported a rich and dynamic ecosystem.
