Ash, Blue

This unique tree is the Blue Ash, scientifically known as the Fraxinus Quadrangulata. The Blue Ash gets its name for a fascinating reason. If you were to take a twig from this tree and stir it in water, you'd see the water turn light blue, an old fashioned way pioneers used to dye cloth! These trees can live for a remarkable 400 years. They have short trunks and narrow crowns formed by small branches. While not as common as other ash trees, the Blue Ash still offers value to the forest ecosystems. Before you go, take some time to observe its distinctive yellowish-green leaves and the bark with long scaly plates that almost resemble alligator hide!
