Oak, Sawtooth

The Sawtooth Oak, or Quercus acutissima, is native to East Asia and often used ornamentally. This tree grows rapidly, reaching heights of 40-60 feet within 20 years. Notice its dark, glossy green leaves in summer, which turn a striking golden brown in fall. Feel the distinctive saw-like edges of the leaves that give the tree its name. Its bark is rough and deeply furrowed; touch the texture to feel its ruggedness. In spring, it produces yellow-green flowers that attract many pollinators. These flowers develop into acorns, a crucial food source for deer, squirrels, and birds.
