Maple, Sugar

You are standing beside the magnificent Sugar Maple, otherwise known as the Acer saccharum. This is the tree that is most commonly associated with maple syrup. Although, it can take as many as fifty Sugar Maples to produce just one gallon of syrup. These trees can live for an impressively long time, up to 400 years. They're very shade tolerant and prefer moist soil. White-tailed deer, moose, and rabbits love to feed on their leaves and twigs. In the spring, you might even see squirrels licking the sap from these trees. The leaves have five lobes with a long stalk and you may recognize it as the leaf featured on the Canadian flag.
