BMW M3: 40 Years of Evolution

The Ultimate Driving Museum and the BMW CCA Foundation is thrilled to present the 2026 exhibition, the BMW M3: 40 Years of Evolution!

 

Opening May 15, 2026, through January 16, 2027, this exhibit will feature exciting and rare vehicles that were born for the track and built for the road. The BMW M3 is a legendary high-performance version of the BMW 3 Series, developed by BMW’s in-house motorsport division. The E30 M3 (1986–1991) wasn't just a faster version of the standard 3 Series; it was a purebred racing car built for the road solely to satisfy a racing rulebook for homologation. With a rich history rooted in racing, the BMW M3 has consistently set the benchmark for performance and remains one of the most iconic and successful sports cars in automotive history.

 

Featuring 24 rare and historically significant vehicles, BMW M3: 40 Years of Evolution offers visitors a front-row seat to the milestones of BMW history. The collection spans street models, unique vehicles, and race versions. 

 

-  The Origin – E30 (1986 - 1991): A purebred racing car built for the road. 
- The Refinement E36 (1992 - 1999): Introducing a more refined experience with the smooth, iconic straight- 

six engine. 
- The Sweet Spot E46 (2000 - 2006): A driver-focused icon for the purists featuring the S54 engine, the perfect combination of old-school mechanics and modern performance. 
-  The Outlier E9X (2007 - 2013): The first and only generation to feature a naturally aspirated V8. 
-  The Modern Era F8X, G8X (2014 - Present): Exploring the split to the M4 coupe/convertibles, the distinctive 

grill design of the current G8X generation, and the return to a straight-six, but with turbocharging.

"This exhibit isn't just for 'gearheads'—it’s for auto enthusiasts, track enthusiasts, adrenaline junkies, but also for anyone interested in how art and engineering collided to shape the way we live – through our cars.”
