Garden of Remembrance & Post 1945 Memorial

Exiting the terrace courtyard and looking to the right you will see a path into a garden of various colourful plants including cacti and eucalyptus trees. Walking this path leads to a memorial listing the countries that the Australian army served in after WWII.

As you stand facing the Shrine of Remembrance, take a moment to appreciate the inscription carved into the west side wall. These words were written by Sir John Monash who was a pivotal figure in the Shrine's creation, declaring this ground sacred. The inscription reads: “LET ALL MEN KNOW THAT THIS IS HOLY GROUND · THIS SHRINE ESTABLISHED IN THE HEARTS OF MEN AS ON THE SOLID EARTH COMMEMORATES A PEOPLE'S FORTITUDE AND SACRIFICE · YE THEREFORE THAT COME AFTER GIVE REMEMBRANCE”.

On either side of the wall there are angelic figures, each with lions on the base, representing England. Finally, looking upwards you may see the flat base and statue atop the Shrine which draws inspiration from the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus. This ancient tomb, considered the first of its kind, was built in the capital city of Caria in the first Persian Empire, located in present-day Türkiye.
