Macpherson Robertson Fountain

As soon as you look towards the Shrine the first thing you might notice is a fountain. Head up to Domain Rd to reach The Macpherson Roberts fountain. This fountain was a donation to Victoria, celebrating 100 years of European settlement in Australia from 1834 to 1934 (1). Macpherson Robertson sponsored expeditions around the Australian outback and Antarctica, and was also a confectionist who invented Cherry Ripe and Freddo Frogs. The boy on top of the fountain represents Dr John Court, who was a pioneer in the study of childhood diabetes.

Why do you think Macpherson Robertson chose to donate this piece for the centenary of European settlement?

Who benefits from the way history is presented through this monument? What is left out?
