Margaret Swain

Margaret Swain called the Grist Mill home.

Born in 1923, Margaret Swain was orphaned at a young age. When she was nine years old, Margaret was adopted by the caretakers of The Mallows, the Head of the Harbor estate owned by Alida Emmett of the Astor family. Perhaps inspired by her childhood spent playing on the historic lands of Stony Brook, as an adult, Margaret became known as a local history aficionado.Many organizations and institutions often consulted her for historical information.Although Margaret moved away from Stony Brook later in life, her love of Stony Brook and its rich history did not wane.

Margaret is survived by her son, a crime writer in Florida.
