The way I began this project was to come up with the idea and then just jump into it; I started scheduling people without ever having made a portrait on cardboard. The first day people were set to arrive I was so freaked out by my unpreparedness, I asked my girlfriend, Jennifer, to sit with me while she read the newspaper so I could paint her. She is my rock and she willingly obliged. She likes art to be unposed so she didn’t want to look at me while I painted her. Of course you can see my insecurity by the size of my signature. As a general rule, the bigger the signature, the less confidence the artist has in the work.
