Three Sisters, created by the Chroma Collective and the artists of the Govalle Elementary School was completed in 2022. This piece is part of a larger project done by students during the 2022 school year, a collection of collages, prints, zines, and more were created to express a desire for a more unified world. Chroma Collective took inspiration from this program, including a saying across their school’s entrance: “plant seeds of kindness.” The words stand boldly against the wall, silhouetted by pinks, yellows, and reds. The mural is a metaphor for community, conveying this not only through its powerful visual, but through its very creation. The title “Three Sisters” is in reference to three indigenous staple crops: squash, corn, and beans– a trio that brought nourishment to communities for centuries. Nature and unity can be one and the same, and this mural illustrates that beautifully.
