Damselfish may be small, but they are fierce protectors of their homes! These colorful fish are often seen darting around coral reefs, fiercely guarding their territory from other fish, including much larger species. Damselfish rely on the reef not only for shelter but also as a place to grow the algae they feed on. They cultivate algae gardens on coral reefs, weeding out unwanted algae and guarding their garden from intruders, which keep the reef healthy and thriving.
There are over 250 species of damselfish, ranging in color from electric blue to bright yellow, orange and black.
