Saxon Foundations

Part of the second known church on this site can be seen through an opening in the floor to your left. These footings are part of the apse (curved end) of the Saxon church which was discovered in 1900. The blue markings on this map show the extent of this church. Externally there are more remains parallel to the north nave wall.

Near the Saxon foundations is the candlestand. Please light a candle and make your requests to God for yourself or for someone you know. Whatever your request, God hears the longing in your heart.

Continue in the same direction and enter St Lawrence’s Chapel - the North Transept.
