As you step into the First Ladies’ Lounge, notice the silhouettes of the presidents (and their first ladies) who have stayed at the Bedford Springs.
There have been 12 presidents here since Dr. Anderson founded the hotel, 4 while they were in office and 8 former presidents.
George Washington was in Bedford twice, once in 1758 while he was a colonel during the French and Indian War. The second time was in 1794 during the Whiskey Rebellion. While he was in Bedford, Dr. Anderson persuaded the President to come out to the Springs and taste the waters.
Thomas Jefferson stayed for several weeks during the summer of 1819. He suffered from acute rheumatism and was willing to undertake the arduous trip here from Monticello, Virginia, because the healing power of the waters was well known.
In August 1848, President James Polk, wrote of the Springs,
“The walks and grounds are neat and well shaded and everything about this establishment has the appearance of comfort. There is a great difference between the hot and sultry atmosphere of Washington and this place.”
James Buchanan, our 15th president, was the only president born in Pennsylvania. He stayed here at the Springs for almost 30 summers, including the 4 years of his presidency from 1857 to 1860.
More recently, George W. Bush visited the hotel in 2012 and played a round of golf on the Old Course.
