The Evitts Building was constructed in the 1830s and renovated in the late 1800s. At that time the hotel’s five separate buildings were connected by their hallways and porches.
Notice that the lighting in this hallway harkens back to the gaslights that were installed in the hotel during the 1880s renovation.
For the first 150 years of its existence, the hotel was a summer-only resort. In the 1950s the hotel was converted to a year-round resort and this porch -- which was originally open air -- was enclosed. The lounge chairs still face out to the lawn, as they did in the 1800s.
The ballroom is named for Ronald Reagan who visited here in 1975 while he was governor of California. He was invited to be a guest speaker for a meeting of the Maryland Chamber of Commerce.
