The Herman Dool Walk is named after the garden’s first director, Herman Dool, who led the garden for 39 years while Mr. Congreve handled global business affairs. Together, they developed the garden extensively, creating 16 km of paths and cultivating over 10,000 plant species. Dool was knighted by the Dutch government for his horticultural contributions. Michael, who worked under Mr. Dool, recalls his memorable wisdom, including valuing fresh air over money. Monty’s Lawn is named after long-serving gardener Morris Monty Burke. Bird numbers have risen due to reduced chemical use. The walk continues toward the lower garden and shore, with the next stop being the pagoda.
