The Temple

The Temple at Mount Congreve, built from Portland stone, offers sweeping views of the surrounding countryside and serves as the final resting place of Ambrose Congreve and his wife Marjorie. Nearby stands a rare Agathis australis conifer, a member of the Araucariaceae family, known for its distinctive seed and immense size in its native southern hemisphere. The adjoining Beach Lawn, originally planted with beech trees, provides a cool, open contrast to the surrounding colour and leads towards one of the Magnolia campbellii walks planted in 1969, where blooms can be seen from miles away. Framed by the Ionic Temple’s pillars, views of the River Suir — one of Ambrose Congreve’s favourite vistas — complete this serene and reflective part of the garden before visitors continue on to the Rockery.
