House & Visitor Centre

Mount Congreve Estate has been home to six generations of the Congreve family and today features 16 kilometres of woodland pathways and a four-acre walled kitchen garden. The gardens reflect the vision of Ambrose Congreve, who inherited the estate in 1962 and, inspired by Lionel Rothschild’s gardens at Exbury, transformed nearly 100 acres with the help of renowned gardener Herman Dool. Deeply devoted to his gardens throughout his life, Ambrose Congreve’s achievements earned him a CBE, an honorary doctorate from Trinity College Dublin, and numerous awards including 13 gold medals at the Chelsea Flower Show. Following his death at the age of 104, the estate is held in Trust for the Irish state, and his legacy continues today through ongoing garden development, plant conservation, and the continued development of the garden.
