The land on which Montclair was founded in 1868 was initially Lenape land. The Lenape are an indigenous people who were forced off of their land when European settlers arrived. The Lenape Trail honors their history. It is 36 miles long. It crosses eleven cities and towns, including Montclair. It enters Montclair in Mills Reservation, then heads southeast towards the Presby Memorial Iris Garden. From there, the trail heads east to Tuers Park, then south to Yantacaw Brook Park and Brookdale Park. Yantacaw is a Lenape word.
