Frances Willard

Churchville, NY

1839-1898

Frances Willard was an educator, member of the woman’s suffrage movement, and founded the Woman's Christian Temperance Union. She was also the first dean of women at Northwestern University. It is important to document the struggles and imperfections within the woman’s suffrage movement. One of these struggles was about the treatment of African American women. Ida B. Wells, an African American activist, battled with Francis because she would not publicly support Well in her campaign against lynching. Francis did in fact use racist terms and was slow to stand behind Wells in her cause.
