Elizabeth Smith Miller

September 20, 1822-1911

Peterboro, NY

Elizabeth Smith Miller was the first woman to develop and wear “Bloomers." She was the cousin of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and was a strong supporter of the suffrage movement. Her ideas for dress reform were soon worn by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and later made popular by Amelia Bloomer through the publication The Lily. It is a little-known fact that the Smith home was a station in the Underground Railroad.
