The McHenry’s had a number of servants including a live-in maid. This was her room. The furnishings in the maid’s room are an odd assortment of furniture comprised of things that were no longer being used by the family. For example the bed is walnut in the Renaissance Revival style, the dresser is mahogany veneer in the Empire style and the wardrobe is actually a repurposed bookcase. The trunk and carpet bag was used for additional storage.
The stove provided heat during the winter months and was typical of the stoves that could be found in each of the bedrooms. The stoves were removed and stored in the spring and installed again in the fall.
Wallpaper was ideal for the maid’s room since it could be bought for 25 cents a roll. The rug on the floor could have been left over remnants of carpet from other rooms. In this case, the carpet is from the front parlor.
